La Vuelta a Dales

The scenic landscapes of the Yorkshire Dales are overlaid by an extensive network of peaceful lanes – perfect for a tour by bicycle. Ride through the national park’s best dales and passes on the Vuelta a Dales route, and climb to the most far-ranging viewpoints.

From the market town of Settle, this circular trail departs the Yorkshire Dales National Park for Pateley Bridge in beautiful Nidderdale. It returns soon enough, and passes through cycle-friendly Leyburn into Cloverdale with a peak at Little Hunter Stones before an exhilarating descent into Kettlewell and Wharfedale.

Hawes, Reeth, Kirkby Stephen and Sedbergh lie ahead on the way back to Settle, and there are challenges aplenty in the dales’ steep hills, the epic Fleet Moss amongst them. Vuelta a Dales is the perfect split between hard work and lavish reward.

Route profile

La Vuelta a Dales Route Profile

There are no flat, easy rides in the Yorkshire Dales. The rolling, hilly landscape here leads to frequent ascents, and novice riders may want to consider a longer itinerary to bring down their daily mileages to compensate.

Experienced hill climbers will appreciate the challenges presented by the famous ascents at Fleet Moss, Buttertubs, and Park Rash. For every difficult climb, Vuelta a Dales serves up gorgeous green vistas and fast, sweeping descents. The exhilarating dive from Little Hunter Stones into Wharfedale is unforgettable.

Terrain

  • Low-traffic country lanes
  • Village streets

Vuelta a Dales keeps to hard surfaces throughout, fit for any road-oriented bicycle. It uses quiet country lanes to explore the surrounding countryside. Along streets with low speed limits, the route dips into cycle-friendly Yorkshire villages.
